C: Where the roll ends
-
D: Inner diameter of the surround
Four different ways in which the surround may be attached to the cone.
In photo 1, the foam surround is attached in
the conventional way – on top of the cone. It therefore becomes straightforward
for you to measure up the four dimensions A,B,C and D as you can simply measure
them up from the top with a ruler.
In photo 2, the (rotted out) foam surround is attached
underneath the cone. This is also a conventional mounting method although not
quite as common as that in photo 1. Note that this speaker also has a gasket
mounted on top of the surround, therefore you will measure the “A” dimension
from outside edge to outside edge of the gasket (as the surround is underneath
the gasket and not visible). The “B” is easy to read as it is where the roll of
the foam surround starts (which is also the inside edge of the gasket). The “C”
is also easy to read, as that is the outside diameter of the grey plastic cone
(also where the foam roll ends). The “D” is not visible as the surround is
mounted underneath the cone. However it is not an important measurement and you
can guess or infer this by just deducting about 7 mm from the “C” dimension.
In photo 3, the (newly replaced) foam surround is also attached
underneath the cone. This speaker does not have a gasket attached on top
therefore the “A” dimension is easy to read. The “B” is also easy to read – it
is the outer diameter of the roll of the surround. The “C” is also easy to
read, as that is the outside diameter of the grey plastic cone (also where the
foam roll ends). The “D” is not visible as the surround is mounted underneath
the cone. However it is not an important measurement and you can guess or infer
this by just deducting about 7 mm from the “C” dimension.
In photo 4 , the PA speaker has a cloth surround attached to
the stop of the cone. This speaker has a gasket mounted on top of the surround,
therefore you will measure the “A” dimension from outside edge to outside edge
of the gasket (as the surround is underneath the gasket and not visible). The
“B” dimension here is where the flexible corrugations in the surround start. The
“C” dimension is where the flexible corrugations in the surround end (also the
outer diameter of the hard paper cone). The “D” dimension is the inner diameter
of the cloth surround – in this photo it extends about 5 mm down from the
“C”each side.
When sizing it up, note that the most important dimension is the “C”
measurement (the inner dimension of the foam roll) which needs to match up with
the edge of the cone fairly accurately and shouldn't deviate by more than two
or three mm in either direction. It usually doesn't matter if the “D” dimension
is a little different, as you don't need a great deal of surround lip (the
difference between the “C” and “D” dimensions) to glue on to the cone – at
least five mm is enough and ten mm or more is usually no problem. The “A”
dimension of our new surround can exceed the foam surround you are replacing by
up to 5 mm, but if it is shorter, check that there is sufficient area on the
frame of the speaker to glue the new foam on – you need at least 6 – 7 mm here.
Now choose the closest model from our
complete range of kits
- one of these kits should fit your speakers.
